Sumptuous Feast

English sumptuary laws were enacted at the time of the Black Death to protect class order from the onslaught of alluring lower class women who were seizing velvets, purple silks and other royal apparel at bargain basement prices as bodies to fill those power clothes were falling dead at record rates. In addition to preserving royal rule through denying access to the vestaments of authority to those who were not born bossy, certain food items such as meats, almonds, and other luxurious treats were denied to… the lower classes as it was feared that a carnivalesque insurrection would follow should they fill their mouths with the tender morsels of the ruling class.
